Oratory of Santa Maria Prima

In 1824 the noble Pagliari family, lords of Commessa, commissioned the architect Giuseppe Cantoni to build a family oratory. They decided to have it built on the grounds of an estate they owned outside the town, not far from the place where, a few years earlier, the oldest church in the town had been demolished, which bore the title “Santa Maria in Ripa d’Adda” (“Our Lady of Ripa d’Adda”). The new little church was dedicated to the “Blessed Virgin of Graces”, but it was popularly called Santa Maria Prima”. The building is in the neoclassical style. The interior is divided into two spaces, namely: the Church – with a circular plan – and the sacristy room – with a rectangular plan. In the centre of the altarpiece a simulacrum of the BVM of Graces supports the blessing Christ Child. The last Pagliari descendant, Mrs. Luigia Pietra Grandi, bequeathed the oratory to the parish church of Commessaggio, to which it still belongs. In 1979 the spouses Angelo Sorini and Luigina Corsi, on the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary, decided to renovate the small church, so dear to them.
